As a global advocate for the desalination, water reuse and advanced water treatment industry, the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) continues its strong support of the use of renewables in advanced water treatment. Once a long-term goal, harnessing the power of renewable energy is now a reality and is leading the way to providing sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions to the world’s growing water scarcity, while also helping to reduce costs.
IDRA is showcasing the use of renewables at three important events in 2019: the WFES Water Forum at the World Future Energy Summit, which will take place January 14-16 in Abu Dhabi and is co-organized by IDRA; IDRA’s third International Action4Good Conference: Creating Resilient Solutions to Water Needs, which will be held May 12-14 in Santa Margherita, Italy; and our flagship event, the 2019 IDRA World Congress: Crossroads to Sustainability, October 20-24 in Dubai, hosted by the Dubai and Electricity Authority.
WFES Water Forum: Disrupting the Water-Energy-Food Nexus to Optimize Efficiency, Security, and Sustainability
The WFES Water Forum will focus on solutions to the world’s significant water scarcity challenges and will present the latest approaches to water supply and demand and water security to can help address these issues. Over three days, the discussion will explore how the latest thinking and technology can optimize resource efficiency, sustainability, and security. In addition, it will explore the evolving role of water in energy production and conversely the use of power in water supply and how technology advances are creating a low-carbon, more cost-efficient future in clean water production. Also, on the agenda is a discussion of the actions that will be required to provide more water resources for food production, and grow food with a fraction of the water used today.
2019 World Congress: Crossroads to Sustainability
Preparations are well underway, and excitement is building for the 2019 IDRA World Congress: Crossroads to Sustainability, which will take place at the Dubai World Trade Center on October 20-24, 2019. Widely considered the preeminent global event for the desalination, water reuse, and advanced water treatment industry, the IDRA World Congress will be hosted by the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), which is internationally renowned for both its sustainable practices and dedication to raising awareness about environmental conservation. DEWA’s Managing Director and CEO, HE Said Al Tayer, has given IDRA his full support for this upcoming Congress.
The Call for Abstracts for the World Congress Technical Program is now open, with topics covering a wide range of advanced water treatment technologies, practices, and experiences. One of the showcase tracks will cover Renewable-driven Desalination, exploring such subjects as:
- Innovations in solar and wind-powered desalination
- Hybridization; low carbon desalination and carbon footprint
- Integrating desalination with low-carbon grids at large scale
- Integration of desalination with renewables at a small scale
- Accelerating deployment of renewable-driven desalination
Other topics in the Technical Program range from Desalination, Water Reuse, and Our Wider World to Environmental Considerations, Innovation, Operations and Optimization of the Energy-Water-Waste Nexus and Making Waste Useful. IDRA invites members of the Global Solar Council to join us in Dubai for this extraordinary event. Congress highlights include the always-popular welcome reception, the Leader’s Summit and Roundtable discussions (new this year), plant tours, and the elegant Gala Dinner. New to this year’s World Congress is the IDRA Corporate Golf Day ‘Crossroads to the Greens’ held on the championship Majlis course, ranked as one of the ‘Top 100 Golf Courses in the World’ by Golf World Magazine, and located at the world-famous Emirates Golf Club in Dubai.
International Action4Good Conference: Creating Resilient Solutions to Water Needs
The conference’s Technical Program will address critical energy and environmental issues, examining what role desalination and water reuse projects can play in creating a more sustainable world. Topics will include the Water-Energy-Food Nexus, non-conventional means of supplying water, and other innovative technologies.
IDRA is accepting papers for this conference, with topics that explore the increasing necessity of these new developments, demonstrating how they will enable us to provide for the economic, societal, and other needs of future generations. The IDRA Sustainable Water Resources Foundation (SWRF)
Earlier this year, IDRA established the IDRA Sustainable Water Resources Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to promoting environmentally safe technologies for water sustainability, including renewables for desalination.
The mission of the SWRF is to advocate for and educate the general public regarding the use of non-conventional water. It also promotes professional education and development in the fields of non-conventional water and clean energy solutions to water needs by awarding scholarships and/or grants for professional training and related study at the undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level, and by arranging and providing for fellowships and internships pertaining to these fields. SWRF’s activities may also include sponsoring research and development activities and projects relating to the production and use of non-conventional water as well as sponsoring technical assistance and training programs related to non-conventional water and clean energy for developing nations.
