About
Founded in 1973, the International Desalination and Reuse Association (IDRA) serves as the global nexus for the desalination and water reuse community. As a non-profit and non-political organization, the IDRA reaches members in over 60 countries, in addition to 15 affiliate member and partner organizations, encompassing both regional and national entities.
Our diverse membership includes scientists, developers, off-takers, regulators, end-users, engineers, consultants, media representatives, and researchers, hailing from governments, corporations, and academia. The IDRA not only operates as an NGO with consultative status recognized by the United Nations ECOSOC but also as a member of the UN-Water Special Framework for Water Scarcity in Agriculture (WASAG), hosted by the UN FAO Land and Water Division.
“Our purpose has, and always will be, to promote water scarcity solutions for this and many more generations to come.”
Connecting People and Ideas to Water Solutions
Connecting the Global Desalination Community
IDRA connects the global desalination community in many ways. We serve more than 2,600 core members in 60 countries and reaches an additional 4,000 affiliate members around the world. Our membership includes scientists, utilities and other end-users, engineers, consultants, financiers, developers, researchers and students representing governments, corporations and academia.
Our educational resources include scholarships, the IDRA Fellowship Program, Young Leaders Program and the IDRA Desalination Academy. Our publications and online and multi-media communications provide ready access to timely industry information. Workshops and conferences held around the world explore specific topics in depth, and our biennial IDRA World Congress is widely recognized as is the premier global event for the desalination and water reuse community.
IDRA is also committed to informing the public about desalination and water reuse, and their critical role in providing new, reliable and sustainable sources of fresh water around the world.
Enhancing Energy Efficiency and Environmental Responsibility
IDRA advocates the development and use of desalination technologies and practices that lower costs, reduce energy requirements and enhance environmental responsibility. Our Energy Task Force is actively engaged in promoting strategies to help the industry further reduce energy requirements, while our Environmental Task Force has developed guidelines to enhance environmental stewardship in the Arabian Gulf, the first region to be studied in depth.
