ACCIONA has been awarded the renovation and extension of the Tróia WTTP by the SONAE Group, consolidating its leading position in the country’s water market, where it has already built more than 25 wastewater treatment plants serving more than 25 treatment plants and 1.4 million inhabitants.
The WWTP is able to treat and produce 4,360 m3/day of water in the high season, using the latest membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology to provide a service to a population of 16,500. On the site of the plant there will be a tank to store 1,800 m3 of treated water to supply a series of local irrigation systems. The plant is designed to reuse wastewater once it has been treated to irrigate the golf courses and green zones in the area, fostering a reduction in drinking water consumption for this purpose.
The contract, valued at 5.2 million euros, will be implemented throughout 2023 and it is expected that the WWTP will enter service in the summer 2024.
Extensive experience
Portugal was one of ACCIONA’s first international markets and the company has developed more than 70 projects there, including all kinds of infrastructures as well as assets under its ownership in wind and photovoltaic technologies.
ACCIONA has participated in the construction of emblematic works in the country such as the Estación de Oriente rail station, the Infante Don Henrique bridge, the Marina at Olhão or the Alqueva Dam. In the water sector it has built more than 30 wastewater treatment and drinking water plants, for example, the WWTP at Companheira (Portimão) or the one at Alcantarilha; both are located in the Algarve.
This year, the company was awarded new water treatment contracts in Portugal for a combined value of more than €12 million, such as the water distribution system in the municipality of Loulé and the improvement of the Asseiceira DWTP, the largest water treatment plant in the country.
