Aqualia will operate Ibiza’s three desalination plants as a consortium
The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (Abaqua) has awarded the consortium formed by Aqualia and Acciona, the contract for the operation, maintenance and conservation of the three desalination plants on Ibiza for the next four years, which can be extended for a further year. In total, the contract amounts to 14.2 million euros.

The two lots awarded include, on the one hand, the management of the Santa Eulària and San Antonio desalination plants and, on the other, the management of the Ibiza desalination plant and the system that connects the three plants, consisting of an island interconnection network of 74 kilometres of pipelines.

These three plants supply the five municipalities of the island of Ibiza – Sant Josep de sa Talaia, Santa Eulària des Riu, Sant Joan de Labritja, Sant Antoni de Portmany and Eivissa – and have a total production capacity of 44,500 m³ per day – equivalent to the volume of water of 18 Olympic swimming pools – distributed through 19 delivery points.

To date, Acciona and Aqualia were already responsible for the joint operation of the desalination plants in Ibiza, San Antonio and Santa Eulària, as well as the upstream supply network.

This new contract consolidates Aqualia’s presence on the island of Ibiza, where, in addition to managing the service in 4 of the 5 municipalities, it is the company responsible for the upstream network system and the desalination system. With its investment in the renewal of networks and in the efficient management of the desalination plants, Aqualia is committed to sustainable water management in the territory based on responsible water consumption for all uses.
