Biodiversity: SUEZ’s commitments recognized by act4nature international

On the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity, act4nature international has validated the biodiversity commitments of SUEZ. act4nature international’s steering committee, consisting of representatives of environmental NGOs and scientific partners, has therefore recognised the SMART characteristics – specific, measurable, additional, realistic and time-bound – of SUEZ’s commitments. This acknowledgement further illustrates the credibility of the 2023-2027 sustainable development roadmap of SUEZ.

Preserving natural resources and biodiversity is one of the three pillars of SUEZ’s sustainable development roadmap. As a signatory to the act4nature international framework, SUEZ adheres to the common commitments defined by this initiative and submits its individual commitments – including those already announced in 2023 as part of its roadmap:

  • Taking action to address the five pressures identified by IPBES as being responsible for biodiversity decline. For example, SUEZ is committed to deploying biodiversity action plans across all its priority sites by 2027, and to using only local species for all of its renaturation and landscaping operations.
  • Accelerating the development of solutions that help to regenerate natural environments. The Group is committed to increasing the annual turnover it generates from these solutions. For example, SUEZ offers customers its Zone libellule® (“Dragonfly Zone”) solution, consisting of additional wastewater treatment using natural ecological processes.

SUEZ is also making new commitments to:

  • Making biodiversity an even more integral part of its strategy. By 2027, 70% of the Group’s projects will be assessed on biodiversity criteria.
  • Increasing stakeholder engagement. The Group is committed to establishing targeted partnerships, promoting the circular economy and water conservation at international events; and increasing biodiversity training for employees.

act4nature international is an initiative supported by a network of companies and scientific partners, environmental NGOs and public-sector organisations. Its aim is to encourage companies to make greater efforts to promote biodiversity through pragmatic commitments supported by their management teams.

2 SUEZ defines biodiversity priority sites as all sites that are in, that cross or that are situated alongside 1) Natura 2000 areas (birds or habitats) in Europe and 2) IUCN category 4, 5 or 6 protected areas in the rest of the world; or that cover an area of over 10 hectares; or that are open landfill sites.

3 In January 2024, SUEZ was awarded the EcoVadis Gold Medal, and in February 2024 it received a double A- rating from CDP for its climate and water stewardship commitments.
