Capture6, a water-positive carbon removal company, is pleased to announce that it has been named the winner of Korea International Water Week’s World Water Challenge 2023. The World Water Challenge is an international contest for water solutions. As a follow up activity of the 7th World Water Forum in 2015, it has been annually held in conjunction with the Korea International Water Week (KIWW), aiming to identify imminent water problems that world is facing and to find feasible solutions to them. The 9th edition of World Water Challenge received 126 applications from 43 countries, engaging a wide breadth of the international water stakeholder community.
Capture6’s approach is unique in providing a highly scalable, energy and water positive method of carbon capture, removal and storage. Its direct air capture process integrates with water treatment technologies and provides a circular economy integration whereby water treatment facilities’ brine is used to produce solvent to capture atmospheric carbon dioxide. By partnering with water treatment facilities and repurposing existing industrial-scale technologies, Capture6 can recover over 50% of freshwater from desalination waste brine for drinking and industrial purposes while capturing CO₂ and eliminating waste brine in the process.
According to various sources, the global municipal water and wastewater sector emits over 800 million metric tons (Mt) of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per year, eclipsing the global shipping (~650 Mt) and aviation (~750 Mt) sectors. Integrating DAC technology into advanced water treatment processes lowers the carbon footprint of water production, reduces, or even eliminates, brine discharge requirements, and generates affordable, decarbonized chemicals that are commonly used to treat water. Capture6’s technology allows for an energy efficient and cost-effective way of removing CO₂ from the atmosphere and offers a promising path to a gigaton carbon removal on a global scale.
“Winning the World Water Challenge 2023 is a testament to our commitment to revolutionize carbon removal. This recognition reinforces our belief that sustainable solutions, particularly our innovative synergy with water treatment facilities, can help the world reach Paris Agreement goals,” said Dr. Leo Park, VP of Strategic Development at Capture6 who received the award in South Korea last week.
About Capture6
Capture6 is a water-positive carbon removal company based in California and New Zealand leveraging its technology to support climate resilience and industrial decarbonization. The company develops and commercializes highly scalable approaches to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Capture6 is pioneering an approach that can be deployed today by repurposing existing industrial-scale technologies. Additionally, when coupled with desalination facilities, Capture6 can recover over 50% of freshwater from desalination waste brine for drinking and industrial purposes in the process of removing CO₂. This creates a meaningful synergy between carbon removal and water security. Learn more at capture6.org.
