On Saturday, Lantania participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Jubail 3A desalination plant (Jazlah Water Desalination Company), located in the city of Jubail in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. During the event, the Infrastructure, Water and Energy Group was recognised by the plant’s developers, ACWA Power, Gulf Investment Corporation (GIC) and AlBawani Water & Power Company (AWP), as one of the key suppliers of the first large-scale desalination plant in Saudi Arabia to integrate photovoltaic solar energy.
The Jazlah project was inaugurated in the presence of His Excellency Abdulrahman bin Abdul Mohsen Al-Fadhli, Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture of Saudi Arabia and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Water Partnership Company. The event was also attended by Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) CEO Khalid Al-Quraishi, ACWA Power Board Chairman Mohammad Abunayyan, GIC CEO Ibrahim Ali AlQadhi and AWP Board Chairman Ibrahim Ali AlQadh. The general manager of Lantania’s Water section, Pedro Almagro, was in charge of representing the company at the ceremony.
Jubail 3A is part of the programme launched by Saudi Arabia to encourage private participation in the water sector. ACWA Power (40.2%), GIC (40%) and AWP (19.8%) make up the company that has developed this project, whose total investment amounts to US$650 million. The EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) consortium formed by Power China, Sepco III, Lantania and Abengoa participated in its execution. While the state-owned Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) is its offtaker.
This desalination plant, which was completed in 30 months, has achieved a world record in energy efficiency with a consumption of less than 2.8kWh/m3 using seawater from the Persian Gulf. Jubail 3A will generate 600,000m3/day of drinking water to supply a population equivalent to 3,000,000 inhabitants, thus ensuring supply to the Eastern, Riyadh and Oassim provinces.
The scope of the project included the construction of a 45.5 MWp photovoltaic solar plant, as well as the associated electrical installations, including the construction of a 380/33 kV and a 11.5 km OHTL substation and the connection to the high-voltage power grid. This facility will supply an average of 20% of the energy required for the production of drinking water with renewable energy, thus producing water in a sustainable manner. In addition, the works have included seawater collection and pumping with the construction of 14km of pipelines, multilayer pressure filtration, an efficient double-pass reverse osmosis system with pressure centre and energy recovery, remineralisation with lime slurry, drinking water pumping station and one-day production storage, effluent treatment and discharge outfall.
