LG Water Solutions Plays Key Role in Successful Completion of Reliability Test at Barka V Desalination Plant

LG Water Solutions, a business unit at LG Chem, is proud to announce the successful completion of the Reliability Test Run at the Barka V IWP (Independent Water Plant) Desalination Plant in the Sultanate of Oman. As a result of the successful completion, the plant officially entered the 25-year operation period on June 22, 2024. Located 58 kilometers west of Oman’s capital city, Muscat, the plant has surpassed expectations by completing the final performance test nine days before schedule. This achievement highlights the plant’s ability to meet the total contracted water capacity of 105,000 m³/d, making it a pivotal milestone for the project.

As the largest desalination plant in the South Al Batinah Governorate region, the Barka V IWP will provide approximately 800,000 residents in the densely populated area with a steady and reliable source of high-quality drinking water, ensuring a better life for its communities and businesses. The project is part of a series of phased water projects in Barka to replace older, less efficient desalination plants with advanced reverse osmosis technology.

Designed under a Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model, the desalination plant is part of the water supply contract between NAMA Power and Water Procurement Company and GS Inima Environment. LG Water Solutions supplied over 9,000 units of its industry’s highest salt rejection SWRO membranes, producing high-quality drinking water more efficiently for energy and operational cost savings. The LG Chem team is very esteemed to work with GS Inima on the Barka V IWP and numerous other vital projects for securing safe and reliable water sources for various regions.

The successful completion of the Reliability Test Run displays LG Water Solutions’ unwavering commitment to operational excellence and high product quality. LG Water Solutions continues expanding its footprint within Oman and the Middle East as a leader in desalination technologies to overcome water scarcity challenges. The company recently secured a supply order of over 23,000 units of SWRO membranes for the Ghubrah III Desalination Plant in Oman. Once commissioned in 2027, LG Water Solutions’ breakthrough NanoH2O™ RO membranes will treat over 50% of Oman’s desalination capacity.

Dr. Hoon Hyung, President of LG Water Solutions, mentioned, “As a trusted partner in the water infrastructure sector, LG Water Solutions continues to drive advancements in desalination technology, demonstrating the company’s commercial and technical excellence in managing challenging requirements of large-scale desalination projects.”
