IDRA Announces Program Highlights and Speakers for 2018 International Conference on Water Reuse and Recycling

INTERNATIONAL DESALINATION AND REUSE ASSOCIATION PRESENTS SECOND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON WATER REUSE AND RECYCLING: MAKING EVERY DROP COUNT

Program Features Plenary, Panel, and Technical Sessions Led by Experts from around the World

ROME, April 18, 2018 – A distinguished roster of speakers from around the world and two days of plenary, panel, and technical sessions headline the International Desalination and Reuse Association’s (IDRA) 2018 International Conference on Water Reuse and Recycling : Making Every Drop Count, held in partnership with IDRA’s Spanish Affiliate AEDyR and with the support of IDRA’s European affiliate, the European Desalination Association (EDS). The conference, which takes place June 24-27 in Valencia, Spain, is being conducted under the patronage of the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment and includes a keynote address from the Spanish Secretary of State for the Environment.

IDRA’s biennial international conference devoted to water reuse, the event will bring together end-users and clients from both industry and public utilities and executives from regulatory agencies to meet with providers of technical solutions, sources of finance, and development experts to discuss the implementation of water reuse and recycling in achieving water sustainability.

“According to information from DesalData, capital expenditure on desalination and water reuse facilities is set to increase globally at an unprecedented rate by over 60% in 2022, as compared to 2013. The conference objective is to make progress toward the goal of obtaining maximum benefit from every drop of water used, and we will deliberate these matters through dynamic panels addressing water reuse regulations, project finance and noteworthy technical sessions discussing case studies, advanced technologies and best practices,” said Ms. Shannon McCarthy, IDRA Secretary General.

“Spain is very proud to host this exciting international conference. During the two-day conference, delegates from around the world and highly regarded speakers will discuss hot topics in reuse, share their experiences and look to the future in technology, legislation, planning and finance. The conference also provides an ideal venue for all attendees to network in a warm, inviting environment,” noted Dr. Domingo Zarzo, President of AEDyR and Conference Co-Chair.

“Treated water reuse is clearly an alternative to resolve water scarcity issues in nearly every corner of the world. However, many countries have not developed such a solution due to the lack of regulation and legislation on the subject. The IDRA conference in Valencia will have a specific high-level panel on reuse legislation, as well as one on multilateral financing of reuse projects, offering these countries and their utility leaders a wonderful opportunity to hear from government experts how to develop rules and regulations that can create a healthy reuse industry, and how to structure the financing of such projects,” said Mr. Borja Blanco, Conference Co-Chair.

“Industrial water reuse makes up about a third of our program and is of major importance to The Circular Economy. An exciting part of our program deals with how we can Make Every Drop Count by using municipal wastewater in reuse schemes for industrial processes,” added Dr. Mike Dixon, Conference Co-Chair.

Keynote Speakers include Dr. María García Rodríguez, Secretary of State for the Environment, Spain; Dr. Liana Ardiles, Director General for Water, Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Environment, Spain; and Professor Emeritus Rafael Mujeriego, Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain.

Plenary panel sessions will address The Big Debate: Water Reuse Regulations in Europe, USA and Asia; Pricing Water Security and Enhancing Practical Financing Tools for Reclaimed Wastewater Reuse; and Research and Market Trends: Thematic Shifts and Macro Level Drivers in Water Reuse Sector.

The Technical Sessions will cover a wide range of topics including Direct and Indirect Potable Reuse, Non-potable and Agricultural Reuse, Water Quality Monitoring and Control, Advanced Technologies for Joint Desalination and Water Reuse (as well as other cutting-edge technologies), Industrial Water Reuse and Recycling, The Circular Economy, The State of Reuse in various countries around the world, Best Practices in Reuse, and Health Concerns in Water Reuse.

The program also features an Evening at the Palace sponsored by Almar Water Solutions, held on Monday, June 25 at the Valencia Arts and Sciences Palace, one of Spain’s most iconic architectural sites. IDRA will also present its Water and Conservation Awards during the Conference Closing Ceremony.

In addition to the conference, the IDRA Academy, in partnership with trainers from AEDyR, will offer a half-day training course titled “State of the Art in Water Reuse: Conventional Tertiary Treatments, Advanced Technologies and Soft Technologies,” conducted by Mr. Antonio Casanas and Dr. Domingo Zarzo.

Conference sponsors include Almar Water Solutions, Future Pipe Industries, Besix, ROPV, Acciona Agua, Toray, Valoriza Agua, PWT and Piedmont and there are more to come.
